Awards & Grants Program of the Editorial council of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry

Objective

In keeping with our mission to provide a means for the interchange of ideas reflecting the complete scope of clinical practice in fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics, maxillofacial prosthetics, restorative dentistry and dental technology, the Editorial Council of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, through it Awards and Grants program, makes funds available to eligible organizations. These funds are awarded to support activities which will ultimately lead to manuscript publication in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry or enhance communication and cooperation among dental communities through the World Wide Web.

Funding Criteria

Proposals for funding submitted to the Editorial Council should be designed to:

  1. Satisfy the priorities of the Editorial Council
  2. Further the goals and missions of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry; and
  3. Expand and disseminate the body of knowledge in prosthodontic research, education and patient services, or improve the health care and wellbeing of the public.

Funding Priorities

Activities which the Council is interested in funding fall into four categories

Research Studies that will expand the body of knowledge in prosthodontics and restorative dentistry, and encourage innovative treatment and management of patient care.

Technical Procedures which will lead to more efficient and/or effective prosthodontic or restorative treatment.

Educational and Professional Meetings (continuing education, symposia, conferences) that will:

  1. Improve the well-being of the public;
  2. Improve the care of elderly, disables (handicapped) and medically compromised patients;
  3. Provide strategies to aid patients with special needs in obtaining appropriate dental care;
  4. Promote the legal and ethical guidelines for prosthodontic practice;
  5. Add to the body of knowledge in prosthodontics, and distribute this information to the academic and practicing communities;
  6. Improve strategies for teaching prosthodontics to pre- and postdoctoral students;
  7. Assist dental and prosthodontic organizations in the advancement of the specialty and discipline of prosthodontics; or
  8. Develop strategies to determine the future prosthodontic needs of the public and how to meet those needs.

Special Projects

  1. in the preparation, publication and distribution of manuscripts that will expand the body of knowledge in prosthodontics for the professional and/or the lay public; or
  2. to facilitate communication among, and distribution of information to dental communities through the World Wide Web;
  3. that directly aid dental healthcare and awareness within the public sector.

Protocol for Application Review

Applications for funding will be reviewed by the Awards and Grants Committee. Members of the committee will rank the applications on a scale of 1 to 5 using the funding criteria and priority statements above to establish a priority score. The committee may, during the review of the proposal, request the assistance of external consultants with expertise in the subject are of the application.

Statements of the quality, significance and contributions of the funding request to the mission statement of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and to prosthodontics in general, and the appropriateness of the budget for each will be presented in the form of a report prepared by the committee. The chair of the Editorial Council will receive the report and submit its recommendations to the members of the Editorial council at its annual meeting. The members of the Council will review the report and recommendations by the Awards and Grants Committees as a basis for approval or rejection. All approved applications will be funded based on availability of funds.
